Miami Valley Districts Lead Good Night for Parks and Recreation Levies

Nearly 70% of parks and recreation ballots appearing on Ohio ballots were approved by voters Tuesday, with two Miami Valley area park districts leading the way.

Overall, 31 of 47 levies were approved. Five Rivers MetroParks in Montgomery County passed a request for additional funds with nearly 62% of the vote. Greene County Parks & Trails passed their five-year renewal levy with 58% of the vote.

“It was a good night overall for parks and recreation levies,” said Woody Woodward, Executive Director of the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association. “Voters around Ohio continue to support parks and recreation programs and facilities that are making major impacts in communities around the state. Those two park districts are leading the way in a number of areas. We are thrilled with those results.”

Woodward said many of the defeats were for additional funds in small rural communities around the state, saying economic concerns may have had an impact. “Most of the losses were in small communities seeking more than 1 mil in additional milage. That can be a tough sell in this economy.”
